Story
Stacked bands of warm color hover against each other, orange and red rectangles layered horizontally across the canvas, their edges soft and glowing rather than sharply defined. The piece was made in oil in 1957 by Mark Rothko (1903–1970), an American painter associated with abstract expressionism. It belongs to The Phillips Collection, having entered the museum's holdings in 1960.
Where it works
A warm-toned color-field abstract suited to living rooms and media rooms, and to restaurants, in a vertical format.
