Story

Soft-edged rectangular shapes float in red, pink, cream, and pale yellow against a muted reddish ground, their boundaries blurred rather than sharply drawn. The forms seem to hover and overlap gently, built up through layered color. This oil painting dates from 1949, created by Mark Rothko (1903–1970), an American artist associated with abstract expressionism, who also made the notable work No. 1.

Where it works

A muted color-field abstract suited to bedrooms and living rooms, and to hotel guest rooms, in a horizontal format.
