Story
Soft rectangles of orange, red, and mauve stack one above another across a glowing warm field, their edges blurred so that the colors seem to breathe into one another. The painting, titled Untitled, was made in 1954 using oil on unprimed canvas, and it is held at the Yale University Art Gallery. It came into the collection through the Katharine Ordway Collection. Mark Rothko (1903–1970) was an American painter associated with abstract expressionism, and his work includes the painting No. 1. Looking closely, one notices how the unprimed canvas lets the pigment sink in unevenly, giving the layered forms a hazy, almost weightless quality that softens every boundary between the stacked shapes and the surrounding warmth.
Where it works
