Story

Vertical rectangular shapes rise against each other, rendered in rust, brown, gray, and white, with thin linear marks threading through the composition. Edges blur softly, giving the forms a loose, layered quality rather than any crisp geometry. The piece is executed in watercolor and black ink on paper, dated 1945. Mark Rothko, who lived from 1903 to 1970, worked within abstract expressionism, exploring color and form on this American-made sheet.
