Story

Three horizontal bands of color stack against a pale ground: a warm orange, a deep dark red, and a brighter red settle one above the other, their edges soft and glowing rather than sharply drawn. The piece is rendered in acrylic on paper mounted on hardboard panel, dated 1968. Mark Rothko, an American painter associated with abstract expressionism, created this untitled work, now held at the National Gallery of Art.

Where it works
