Story

Two muted mauve rectangles stack one above the other, separated by a thin white band and set against a warm beige field. The composition stays simple, its soft tones giving the surface a hushed, contemplative quality. This piece was made with acrylic on paper in 1969 by Mark Rothko (1903–1970), an American artist associated with abstract expressionism. The restrained palette reflects his approach to color and form in his later work.

Where it works

A muted color-field abstract suited to bedrooms and hallways, and to hotel guest rooms, in a vertical format.
