Story

A large field splits into two horizontal zones, one muted gray and one soft beige, with brushwork left visible across the surface. There is no figure or line beyond this quiet division of tone. The piece was made in acrylic on paper in 1969 by Mark Rothko (1903–1970), an American artist associated with abstract expressionism, held at the National Gallery of Art.

Where it works
