Story
A broad blue rectangle floats above a dark horizontal band, set against a pale cream ground, in a composition built from large, simplified shapes rather than any recognizable scene. The piece is untitled, made in 1969 by Mark Rothko using acrylic on wove paper, and it is held at the National Gallery of Art. It came to the museum as a gift from the Mark Rothko Foundation, Inc. Rothko, who lived from 1903 to 1970, worked within abstract expressionism, developing paintings built from color and form rather than depicted subjects. Worth noticing is how the blue mass and the dark band sit close together yet remain distinct, their edges soft against the surrounding cream field, giving the surface a quiet, layered depth despite its reduced means.
Where it works
A cool-toned color-field abstract suited to bedrooms and living rooms, and to hotel guest rooms, in a vertical format.
