Cattleya Orchid and Three Hummingbirds

Story

A large pink orchid with green leaves fills the center of a misty jungle, its petals framed by hanging moss and dense vegetation while three colorful hummingbirds move through the scene. The painting was made in 1871, rendered in oil on wood, and is held today at the National Gallery of Art, having come to the museum as a gift from a foundation. It was painted by Martin Johnson Heade (1819–1904), an American artist associated with the Luminism movement. Looking closely, the hummingbirds appear scattered among the thick foliage, each catching a different patch of light, adding small bursts of color against the pale bloom and the shadowed greenery surrounding it.
