Story
A wide marsh stretches beneath a darkening sky, its winding stream cutting through grassy flats dotted with haystacks and scattered trees. Small figures move across the land as heavy clouds gather overhead, signaling a coming storm. This oil painting was made in 1871 by Martin Johnson Heade (1819–1904), an American painter associated with the Hudson River school and Luminism, movements noted for their attention to light and atmosphere in landscape.
