Rio de Janeiro Bay

Story

Waves roll gently onto a sandy shore while sailboats drift across calm turquoise water, bordered by green headlands under a sky filled with white clouds and golden light. This oil painting, titled Rio de Janeiro Bay, was created in 1864 by Martin Johnson Heade and is held at the National Gallery of Art. Heade (1819–1904) was an American painter associated with the Hudson River school and Luminism, also known for his notable work Sunset: A Scene in Brazil. One detail worth noticing is how the golden sky meets the turquoise sea, giving the whole bay a glowing, tranquil atmosphere that draws attention to the small sailboats resting on the water.
