Story
A woman dressed in a patterned garment holds a young child close, looking directly at the child's face, set against a soft cream-toned room. The print, titled Maternal Caress, was made in 1890 using color drypoint and aquatint on laid paper, and it is held at the National Gallery of Art, having come from the Chester Dale Collection. The artist, Mary Cassatt (1844–1926), was an American figure associated with Impressionism, also known for her work Little Girl in a Blue Armchair. One detail worth noticing is the warmth of the background tone, which sets off the figures and draws attention to the tenderness of their embrace.
