The Bath

Story

A woman dressed in a yellow patterned gown leans over a nude infant, bathing the child beside a blue basin. The print was made in 1890 using color drypoint and aquatint on laid paper, and it is held at the National Gallery of Art, having come from the Chester Dale Collection. Mary Cassatt (1844–1926), an American artist associated with Impressionism, also created the notable work Little Girl in a Blue Armchair. Worth noticing is the contrast between the woman's richly patterned dress and the smooth, bare form of the child, a detail that draws the eye toward the quiet closeness of the moment being shared.
