The Child's Bath

Story

A woman wearing a striped robe leans close to a young child, steadying a small basin as the bathing takes place. The two figures are pressed together in a tender, intimate pose, surrounded by walls covered in patterned wallpaper rendered in soft purples, greens, and earthy browns. This oil painting was completed in 1893 and is held at the Art Institute of Chicago. Mary Cassatt (1844–1926), an American citizen associated with Impressionism, also created the notable work Little Girl in a Blue Armchair. One detail worth noticing is how the muted wallpaper tones frame the pair without overwhelming the quiet focus of the scene, letting the viewer's eye settle naturally on the shared gesture between the two figures.
