Story
A cluster of stone buildings lines a sandy shore next to tranquil blue-green water, set beneath a soft pale sky. The scene is quiet, with the structures positioned near the edge of the beach where the water meets the sand. Odilon Redon painted this view in 1880, working in oil on cardboard mounted on hardboard, and the piece is held at the National Gallery of Art. Redon, who lived from 1840 to 1916 and worked in France, became associated with Symbolism, and is also known for his work The Cyclops. Looking closely, the calm surface of the water takes on a gentle blue-green tone that contrasts with the pale sky above, giving the whole village a settled, still atmosphere.
