The Large Pine

Artist

Paul Cézanne was a groundbreaking French artist whose work formed a vital bridge between Impressionism and the emergence of modern art movements such as Cubism. Born in Aix-en-Provence, Cézanne initially studied law before dedicating himself fully to painting, eventually moving to Paris where he befriended artists including Camille Pissarro and writer Émile Zola. Though associated with the Impressionists, Cézanne developed a highly individual style focused on structure, form, and the underlying geometry of nature.Known for his still lifes, landscapes, and repeated studies of Mont Sainte-Victoire, Cézanne used layered brushstrokes and shifting perspectives to create compositions of remarkable depth and balance. Initially misunderstood by critics, his work later profoundly influenced artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, both of whom regarded him as a foundational figure of modern painting. Today, Cézanne is celebrated as one of the most important and influential artists in Western art history.
