Story
A dense arrangement of blooms unfolds in a patchwork of geometric blue, green, yellow, pink, and orange shapes, suggesting a garden broken into abstract fragments rather than rendered naturalistically. Paul Klee made this piece in oil on cardboard in 1913. Klee, a German-Swiss artist associated with Expressionism, built the image through pattern and color rather than literal form. The work entered the Guggenheim's collection through purchase from the Karl Nierendorf estate.
Where it works
Suited to living rooms and kids' rooms, and to restaurants, in a horizontal format.
