Story
Simplified figures with round heads and boxy bodies stretch across the surface in yellow and beige, outlined in brown, suggesting bodies at rest. Paul Klee painted this scene called Reclining (Lying Down) in oil on burlap in 1939. Klee, a German-Swiss artist (1879–1940), worked within the Bauhaus and Expressionism movements. The piece entered the Detroit Institute of Arts as a gift from Miss Edith Ferry.
