Story
A single dark cypress rises through the middle of the composition, its pointed form reaching into a sky full of curling, windswept blue strokes, while golden fields of wheat stretch out beneath it and a thin crescent moon hangs above. The painting dates to 1889 and was made in oil on canvas; it is held today at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, having come to the museum through the Rogers Fund. Vincent van Gogh (1859–1891) painted it during a period marked by his distinctive, energetic brushwork. Worth noticing is how the swirling patterns in the sky echo the shape of the tree itself, pulling the eye upward from the wheat toward the moonlit air.
