Story
A man with a reddish beard turns his head toward the left side of the frame, set against a background of teal and orange that seems to shift and pulse around him. The painting is a self-portrait made in 1887, rendered in oil on an artist's board that has since been mounted on a cradled panel, and it is held today at the Art Institute of Chicago, having come to the museum through the Joseph Winterbotham Collection. The artist, Vincent van Gogh (1859–1891), painted numerous self-portraits across his career. Looking closely, the brushwork in the backdrop breaks into short, choppy strokes of contrasting color, giving the surface behind the figure a restless, woven quality that pulls attention away from any plain stillness and toward the energy of the paint itself.
