Composition IV

Story

Bold black lines cut across a pale ground, framing scattered geometric shapes and bursts of blue, yellow, red, and purple that seem to float rather than settle into fixed forms. The painting is rendered in oil tempera on canvas, completed in 1911. Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944), a Russian artist associated with Expressionism, developed this nonrepresentational language, also known for his later work Composition VII.
