Story
A fisherman wearing a straw hat sits in a small rowboat, arm extended as he throws his line out toward a wooded shoreline rendered in soft greens, blues, and tans. The scene feels quiet, with the water and distant trees blending into a gentle, hazy palette that suggests calm concentration. This piece, titled Casting, Number Two, was made in 1894 using watercolor over graphite, and it is held at the National Gallery of Art. The artist, Winslow Homer (1836–1910), worked in the realism tradition, capturing everyday moments with careful observation. One detail worth noticing is how the angler's posture, leaning forward with his line mid-air, captures the brief suspended moment just after the cast, giving the whole composition a sense of motion despite its stillness.
