Story
A lone figure stands on a jagged shoreline, facing choppy waves that roll in beneath a heavy, overcast sky, the whole scene rendered in earthy browns, grays, and subdued blues. This oil painting, titled Rocky Coast (Maine Coast), was created in 1882 by Winslow Homer and is held at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, where it entered the collection through an endowed fund established in memory of a donor. Homer, an American painter born in 1836 and died in 1910, worked within the realist movement and also produced the notable painting A Country Lad. Worth noticing is how small and still the human figure appears against the restless water and brooding clouds, emphasizing the raw scale of the coastal setting over any sense of human command of it.
