The Gulf Stream, 1899

Story

A lone man rides a small wooden boat on dark, churning blue and green ocean water, sharks circling nearby beneath a cloudy sky. The scene conveys isolation and danger at sea through heavy waves and shadowed light. Winslow Homer painted this in oil in 1899, and it hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Homer, American, lived 1836–1910, and his work is associated with realism.

Where it works

A cool-toned seascape suited to dens and media rooms, and to boardrooms, in a horizontal format.
