Alfred Sisley

Alfred Sisley was a British-born French Impressionist painter celebrated for his luminous landscapes and sensitive depictions of nature. Born in Paris in 1839 to English parents, Sisley studied art alongside fellow Impressionists including Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Frédéric Bazille at the studio of Charles Gleyre. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Sisley devoted nearly his entire career to landscape painting, capturing rivers, villages, bridges, and countryside scenes with delicate color and atmospheric light.

A dedicated plein-air painter, Sisley focused on portraying the changing effects of weather and seasons with remarkable subtlety and harmony. His tranquil compositions and restrained palette distinguished his work within the Impressionist movement. Although he struggled financially and received limited recognition during his lifetime, Sisley remained committed to Impressionism and its ideals. Today, he is regarded as one of the purest landscape painters of the movement, admired for his poetic interpretations of the French countryside and mastery of natural light.
