Ammi Phillips was a prolific American itinerant portrait painter whose career spanned from the mid-1810s through the early 1860s across Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York. His work has been variously classified as folk, primitive, provincial, and itinerant art, reflecting both the distinctive character of his paintings and the enduring mystery surrounding his life and practice. More than 800 works are attributed to Phillips, though only eleven are known to bear his signature.
Although Phillips developed a highly recognizable visual formula, his paintings continually evolved as he refined successful elements and incorporated individualized details that reflected the identity and status of his sitters. He is especially celebrated for his portraits of children dressed in red—despite such works representing only a small portion of his overall oeuvre. Among the most iconic is Girl in Red Dress with Cat and Dog, which achieved a landmark sale price of one million dollars in 1985, marking a milestone for American folk art.
