Edward Sheriff Curtis was an American photographer and ethnologist best known for documenting the lives, cultures, and traditions of Indigenous peoples of North America. Over more than 30 years, he traveled extensively, producing over 40,000 photographs and recording languages, ceremonies, and oral histories. His monumental 20-volume work, The North American Indian, remains one of the most significant visual and ethnographic records of Native American life in the early twentieth century. Though some of his methods have been debated, Curtis’s work is widely recognized for its artistic beauty and historical importance.
