Juan de Zurbarán
Juan de Zurbarán was a Spanish Baroque painter best known for his refined still-life compositions. Born in Llerena, Spain, he was the son of celebrated painter Francisco de Zurbarán and trained in his father’s workshop in Seville, one of the artistic centers of seventeenth-century Spain.
Specializing in still lifes, Juan depicted fruit, flowers, ceramics, metalware, and other everyday objects with remarkable precision and dramatic contrasts of light and shadow. His carefully balanced compositions reflect the Spanish bodegón tradition while revealing influences from Italian and Flemish still-life painting. Works such as Still Life with Lemons in a Wicker Basket demonstrate his sensitivity to texture, color, and luminous detail.
Zurbarán’s promising career was tragically brief. He died in Seville at just 29 years old during the devastating plague epidemic of 1649. Despite his short life, he is regarded as an important Spanish Baroque still-life painter.
