Mount Monadnock

Story

A winter woodland stretches toward a far-off summit, its slopes catching warm golden light beneath a soft pale blue sky, the snow lending the whole scene a hushed stillness. This oil painting, titled Mount Monadnock, was completed in 1911 and is held today by the National Gallery of Art. Its maker, Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849–1921), was an American painter and naturalist also known for Stevenson Memorial. The most striking detail is how the glow on the distant peak contrasts with the cooler shadows of the trees nearer the viewer, drawing the eye steadily from the dense foreground growth back toward the quiet, luminous rise of the mountain itself under the open winter sky.
