Story

A still body of water rests among tall granite peaks, their rocky faces catching golden light against a sky mixing warm and cool hues. This oil painting was completed in 1867. The artist, Albert Bierstadt (1830–1902), a German-American painter, worked within the Hudson River school, a tradition devoted to grand depictions of the American wilderness and its dramatic natural light.
