Story
A vast mountain range rises above a quiet lake, with waterfalls spilling down rocky slopes and animals grazing in a forest clearing, all set beneath a sky heavy with drifting clouds and bathed in golden, brown light. This oil painting, titled Among the Sierra Nevada, California, was completed in 1868 and is held at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The artist, Albert Bierstadt (1830–1902), worked within the Hudson River school and also created North Dome, Yosemite Valley. One detail worth noticing is how the warm golden tones settle across the water, catching the reflection of the cliffs and softening the drama of the clouds above.
