Story
Granite cliffs rise around a mist-filled valley, where cascading water drops past evergreen forest toward the shadowed floor below. The composition sets looming rock faces against delicate waterfalls, giving a sense of great scale and quiet depth. Painted in oil by Albert Bierstadt (1830–1902), a German-American artist associated with the Hudson River school, the work entered the North Carolina Museum of Art through a purchase fund supported by the North Carolina State Art Society and other donors.
