Donner Lake from the Summit

Story

A high mountain basin opens around a still lake, ringed by forested peaks catching the glow of early morning light. Soft ochre and brown hues wash across the ridgelines and water, giving the whole scene a warm, hazy atmosphere. Albert Bierstadt painted this oil work in 1873. He was a German-American artist associated with the Hudson River school, known also for North Dome, Yosemite Valley.
