Story
A powerful waterfall drops through a steep canyon, its golden-brown rock walls rising on either side and framed by dark evergreen forest beneath a grey, overcast sky. The scene captures Yellowstone Falls in a moment of raw natural force, rendered as a landscape view that emphasizes the scale of the gorge against the thundering water below. This piece was created in 1881, painted in oil on paper mounted on canvas. Albert Bierstadt (1830–1902), a German-American painter associated with the Hudson River school, is also known for his work North Dome, Yosemite Valley. Notice how the mist and spray soften the hard edges of the canyon, letting the pale water seem to glow against the darker stone and trees that enclose it.
