The Coming Storm

Story

A group of deer graze quietly along the shore of a still lake, framed by tall, heavy trees that rise around them. Above the water, clouds gather in thick masses, their forms touched by streaks of gold against darker gray, signaling a storm that has not yet broken. The painting, titled The Coming Storm, was created by Albert Bierstadt in 1869 using oil, and it is held today at the Addison Gallery of American Art. Bierstadt, who lived from 1830 to 1902, worked within the Hudson River school and also created North Dome, Yosemite Valley. One detail worth noticing is how the golden light breaking through the clouds falls across the water near the grazing deer, giving the scene a quiet tension between calm and the approaching weather above.
