The Golden Gate

Story

Rocky cliffs rise above a churning sea, with waves breaking hard against the shore near a small beached boat, while distant mountains fade under a clouded sky rendered in browns, blues, and whites. The scene is painted in oil, completed in 1872. Albert Bierstadt (1830–1902), a German-American painter associated with the Hudson River school, created this work titled The Golden Gate.
