Story
Steep granite walls rise on either side of a sunlit valley, enclosing a quiet river where deer graze along the grassy bank beneath scattered trees. Golden light settles across the water and stone, giving the scene a glowing, open depth. This oil painting was made in 1864 by Albert Bierstadt (1830–1902), a German-American artist associated with the Hudson River school. It belongs to the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.
