Story
A broad valley opens between towering rock walls, with a river winding through forested slopes under soft golden light and a pale sky. This oil painting dates from 1868. Albert Bierstadt (1830–1902), a German-American painter associated with the Hudson River school, created it. The piece entered the Oakland Museum of California as a gift from Marguerite Laird in memory of Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Laird.
