Story
A valley stretches beneath steep rock walls, its floor softened by haze while a river curves through scattered evergreens. Light breaks through the mist in golden patches, giving the scene a hushed, glowing quality. This oil painting, titled Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point Trail, was created in 1873 by Albert Bierstadt and is held at the Yale University Art Gallery. Bierstadt (1830–1902), a German-American painter associated with the Hudson River school, also produced North Dome, Yosemite Valley. One detail worth lingering on is how the sunlight filters through the haze above the cliffs, catching the tops of the trees and the surface of the winding river below, lending the whole valley a soft, luminous depth that draws the eye gradually from foreground to distant rock faces.
