Portrait of an Army Doctor

Jagged planes of white, blue, red, yellow, and black cut across the canvas, their angular edges overlapping to suggest a figure broken into facets rather than rendered whole. The composition pulls the eye through shifting diagonals, each shard of color pressing against the next until the surface reads as a dense architecture of fragments. Painted in 1914 in oil, this piece is held at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Albert Gleizes (1881–1953), a French artist associated with Section d'Or, also produced the notable work Harvest Threshing. One detail worth noticing is how the red and yellow fragments break the dominant blue and white planes, giving the eye a point of contrast within the otherwise cool, angular field.
