Story

A man with a long, wavy beard and flowing hair stares straight out at the viewer, his face framed by a brown coat trimmed in fur, set against a shadowed backdrop. The piece was painted in oil on panel in 1500 and now resides at the Alte Pinakothek. Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528), a German artist associated with the German Renaissance, created this image as his self portrait at twenty-eight.
