The Rhinoceros

Story

A thick-skinned rhinoceros stands in profile, facing left, its body covered in overlapping plates and ornamental markings rendered through dense cross-hatched lines. The black ink lines sit against bare white paper, giving the creature a sculpted, almost armored appearance. This is a woodcut engraving by Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528), a German artist associated with the German Renaissance who also worked as an art theorist, copper engraver, and designer, and who created Adam and Eve.

Where it works

Suited to libraries and living rooms, and to hotel guest rooms, in a horizontal format.
