Story

A fortified city rises along a river valley, its towers set against surrounding mountains and trees rendered in soft blues, greens, and browns. The settlement spreads across the sloping terrain, with the water winding below the walls. This scene was made in watercolour and gouache on paper in 1494 by Albrecht Dürer, a German artist working within the German Renaissance.
