Story

A simplified face emerges from blocks of color, with red, blue, green, orange, and yellow rectangles arranged against an ochre ground, suggesting features through geometry rather than detail. The composition was painted in oil on cardboard in 1933. Alexei Jawlensky (1864–1941), a German artist associated with Expressionism, created this piece, part of his broader exploration of the abstract head theme, reducing the human face to essential planes of color and form.

Where it works

Suited to living rooms and media rooms, and to restaurants, in a vertical format.
