Story
A face dissolves into blocks of color, built from angular and curving forms in yellow, red, teal, pink, and purple spread across the canvas. The simplified features suggest a head reduced to its essential planes rather than realistic detail. Painted in oil in 1923, the work reflects Alexei Jawlensky's engagement with Expressionism, where color and shape carry emotional weight beyond likeness. It entered the San Diego Museum of Art as a gift honoring Dalzell Hatfield.
Where it works
Suited to dining rooms and media rooms, and to restaurants, in a vertical format.
