Story
A woman's face glows yellow against a deep blue backdrop, her hair rendered in bursts of red and orange rather than naturalistic tones. The features are simplified and flattened, pushing the portrait away from realism and toward a bolder, more emotional treatment of color and shape. This piece, titled Frauenkopf, was painted in 1911 using oil on millboard laid on plywood, and it is held today by the National Galleries of Scotland. Its creator, Alexei Jawlensky (1864–1941), was a German artist associated with Expressionism, known also for his work Abstract Head. One detail worth noticing is how the warm yellow of the face contrasts sharply against the cool blue surrounding it, intensifying the sense of heat radiating from the hair's red and orange strands.
