Story
A face appears with eyes shut, its features simplified into a mask of muted greens and whites, broken by accent colors in horizontal stripes. The composition feels still and inward, built from oil paint applied in flattened, abstracted planes. This piece was made with oil and pencil on linen-finish paper laid down on board in 1921 by Alexei Jawlensky, a German artist of Expressionism, born in the Russian Empire, who worked as a draftsperson and art collector, also known for Abstract Head.
