Story

A stylized face emerges through heavy black outlines, divided into geometric planes of purple, yellow, green, and orange set against a tan ground, giving the features an abstracted, mask-like quality. The piece is rendered in oil on cardboard and dates to 1917. It reflects Alexei Jawlensky's engagement with Expressionism, a German and Russian Empire artist whose notable work includes Abstract Head.
