Story
A woman's face fills the canvas, her eyes shut as if resting or turned inward, set against a glowing red field. The brushwork is loose and vivid, built from strokes of yellow, green, pink, blue, and orange that model her features without strict regard for natural skin tones. This piece, titled Portrait of a Woman, was painted in 1912 by Alexei Jawlensky in oil, and it is held today at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Jawlensky, who lived from 1864 to 1941 and held German citizenship, worked within Expressionism, a movement that prized intense color and emotional directness over realistic depiction. Looking closely, the way the pink and orange strokes gather around her cheeks and mouth gives the face an inner warmth that contrasts sharply with the flat red backdrop surrounding her.
