Story
A cluster of pink roses rises from a decorative blue and white vase, set on a red surface against a dark background. The arrangement glows warmly despite the surrounding shadow. Alexei Jawlensky painted this still life in oil in 1906, working within the Expressionism movement. The piece came to the North Carolina Museum of Art as a gift from Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Levin. Jawlensky, born in the Russian Empire and later a German citizen, lived from 1864 to 1941.
Where it works
A warm-toned still life suited to living rooms and dining rooms, and to restaurants, in a vertical format.
